EMDR Therapy

When Your Mind Understands, But Your Body Still Reacts

You have likely spent years developing a clear and accurate understanding of your history. You can map out the events, the people, and the circumstances that shaped who you are today, and you have likely articulated this story well in previous therapeutic settings.

However, you may still find that despite this deep understanding, your body continues to respond as if it is in danger. When you encounter a stressful moment, your nervous system may trigger a ‘fight or flight’ reaction before you have a chance to think it through.

This creates a frustrating disconnect: your mind knows you are safe, but your body is still firing as if you are not. This is not a failure of your insight or effort; it is simply a sign that the physiological response to your past remains active. EMDR is a way to bridge that gap – helping your body catch up to your mind so you can finally move forward with a sense of calm and presence.

When Understanding Isn’t Enough

You may have spent years building a clear, accurate narrative of your history in previous therapy. While this insight is valuable, you might still notice that your body reacts with a ‘fight or flight’ response before your mind can intervene. This isn’t a failure of your understanding; it is simply because the physiological charge of a memory lives in a different part of the brain than the story itself.

Addressing the Root of the Response

Talk therapy is excellent for understanding your history, but EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is designed to do something different: it addresses the physiological charge directly. By focusing on the body’s reaction rather than just the narrative, we can help your system process these memories so they no longer trigger an automatic, overwhelming response.

A Gentle, Controlled Approach

Healing does not require you to re-experience the most difficult moments of your past in vivid detail. We work together to identify entry points that feel manageable for you. Before we begin any processing, we will agree on our targets and establish clear ways to track your progress, ensuring you feel grounded and in control throughout the session.

Finding Ease in the Present

During an EMDR session, you hold a memory in mind while engaging in bilateral stimulation – a rhythmic, gentle process that helps your brain integrate the experience. This approach is structured and predictable, allowing you to lower the intensity of past memories without feeling overwhelmed. Over time, these memories lose their power to dictate your current reactions, allowing you to be more present in your daily life.

Integrating the Memory, Reclaiming Your Present

The goal of this work is not to erase your history, but to change how that history lives within you. You will keep your memories and the valuable insights you have gained about yourself over the years. What changes is the intensity of the physiological response attached to those memories.

As we process these experiences, they naturally lose their ability to interrupt your day-to-day life. You move from reacting to the past to choosing how to engage with the present. You are not losing your story; you are simply ensuring it no longer dictates your future.

Reclaiming Your Calm

As the physiological charge fades, the insights you’ve gained over the years finally have room to take root in your body. You may notice that situations that once consumed your energy now feel manageable. The sense of detachment begins to thin, and you can engage with your work, your partner, and your children with renewed presence and ease.
